Agreement for Cooperation Signed Between IUS and the Institute for Development Planning of Sarajevo Canton

On Wednesday, December 10, 2025, the International University of Sarajevo (IUS) signed a Cooperation Agreement with the Institute for Development Planning of the Canton Sarajevo, marking an important step toward strengthening collaboration in architectural education, urban planning, and scientific research.

The Agreement was signed by the IUS Rector, Prof. Dr. Ali Osman Kuşakcı, on behalf of IUS, and by the Director of the Institute, Mr. Arch. Faruk Muharemović, on behalf of the Institute for Development Planning of the Sarajevo Canton. The official meeting was attended by Asst. Prof. Dr. Nerma Omićević, Architecture (ARCH) study program coordinator, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Adi Ćorović from the same program, and Dr. Arch. Nataša Tabori, Assistant Director of the Institute for Development Planning, responsible for detailed planning documentation and technical preparation.

The Agreement includes joint work on sustainable urban development and landscape design projects, architectural and spatial planning initiatives, protection of architectural, cultural, historical, and natural heritage, preparation of planning documentation, participation in scientific and professional projects, advisory collaboration, and joint promotion. The Agreement also covers cooperation in the field of education, including opportunities for student internships.

The Rector Prof. Dr. Ali Osman Kuşakcı and Director Mr. Arch. Faruk Muharemović emphasized that this cooperation will bring significant benefits to both institutions - particularly to students, who will gain the opportunity to engage with practical activities of a key urban planning institution beyond the academic environment. At the same time, the Institute will benefit from a continuous exchange of experience, theoretical insights, and practical knowledge with IUS professors and Architecture students, who will contribute creative planning proposals at an academic level.

Prof. Omićević highlighted that the informal cooperation with the Institute has already begun. Students in the course Urban Design and Planning ARCH302, taught by Prof. Ćorović, are currently working on a project located on a site proposed by the Institute’s experts. Prof. Ćorović invited representatives of the Institute to participate in reviewing the final student planning solutions and suggested organizing an exhibition showcasing the most successful student works.
