From IUS to Sweden: Dr. Aida Selimović-Pašić Explores DNA Methylation in Leukemia Treatment

Dr. Aida Selimović-Pašić, alumna of the Genetics and Bioengineering (GBE) program at the International University of Sarajevo (IUS), has successfully defended her doctoral dissertation entitled “Targeting DNA Methylation in Leukemic Cells” at Linköping University, Sweden.

Her research addresses one of the most pressing challenges in modern oncology - how to effectively manipulate DNA methylation, a crucial epigenetic process that regulates gene activity and is often disrupted in cancer cells. By investigating the biological effects of hypomethylating agents (drugs that alter DNA methylation patterns), Dr. Selimović-Pašić aimed to better understand their therapeutic mechanisms and potential side effects in the treatment of leukemia.

Dr. Selimović-Pašić’s dissertation highlights the complexity of epigenetic therapies and offers valuable contributions to the ongoing development of targeted, less toxic cancer treatments. Her work not only deepens scientific understanding of the molecular mechanisms driving leukemia but also opens new possibilities for designing more effective therapeutic strategies in the future.

Her academic path - from the International University of Sarajevo to one of Sweden’s most respected research institutions - exemplifies the excellence, determination, and global vision nurtured at IUS.

The International University of Sarajevo proudly supports and celebrates the success of its alumni, whose achievements continue to strengthen the university’s reputation as a place of innovation, research excellence, and international collaboration.
