From Sarajevo to Saarbrücken: IUS Alumna Dr. Berina Muhović Redefines Eye Disease Treatment
Dr. Berina Muhović, an alumna of the Genetics and Bioengineering (GBE) program at the International University of Sarajevo (IUS), has successfully defended her doctoral dissertation in Systems Biotechnology at the prestigious Saarland University in Germany.
Her groundbreaking research offers a novel biotechnological approach to treating Dry Eye Disease (DED) – one of the world’s most common ocular disorders – by using bacterially synthesized ectoine, a natural molecule that protects cells from damage caused by environmental stress.
In her study, Dr. Muhović genetically engineered bacteria to produce ectoine and encapsulated them in polymers, creating an advanced system for targeted and sustained drug delivery. This innovative method paves the way for more effective and durable treatments for Dry Eye Disease.
Her academic journey led her from Sarajevo to Saarbrücken, where she conducted research within the Leibniz Science Campus for Living Therapeutic Materials, a collaboration between the Leibniz Institute for New Materials (INM), Saarland University, and the Helmholtz Institute for Pharmaceutical Research (HIPS).
In addition to her scientific achievements, Dr. Muhović demonstrated exceptional science communication skills, winning second place in the 3-Minute Thesis competition organized by the BH Futures Foundation, where she presented her complex research with clarity and enthusiasm.
Her work bridges biology, engineering, and medicine, serving as a source of pride for Bosnia and Herzegovina and an inspiration to young scientists pursuing international research careers.
The International University of Sarajevo extends heartfelt congratulations to Dr. Berina Muhović on her outstanding success. Her dedication and innovation exemplify how science from Bosnia and Herzegovina can make a global impact.
