IUS Engineering Students Explore Renewable Energy Facilities in Jablanica and Mostar

Students of the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences (FENS) at the International University of Sarajevo (IUS) recently had the opportunity to take their classroom learning into the real world during a study visit to two major Elektroprivreda BiH energy facilities — the Jablanica Hydropower Plant and the Mostar Wind Farm.

The visit was organized under the guidance of Dr. Ismar Alagić, IUS professor, in cooperation with Dr. Anes Kazagić from Elektroprivreda BiH, and included students enrolled in courses ME 210, ME 312, ENS 208, and ME 414.

Throughout the visit, students gained valuable insights into the technological processes of electricity generation and transmission, exploring how energy flows from renewable sources to end consumers. The program placed a special focus on applied engineering practices and the role of renewable energy technologies in modern power systems.

Students had the chance to see advanced process-control equipment, observe real-time monitoring of key performance parameters, and understand how complex energy systems are managed. Of particular interest was the demonstration of state-of-the-art Siemens technology, where experts from the company explained equipment functionality, system maintenance, and efficiency optimization.

According to Dr. Alagić,

“Our students were able to see firsthand how wind and hydroelectric power plants operate — from turbine systems and control rooms to the complete process of electricity production. For many of them, this was the first time they experienced such advanced energy facilities up close.”

The visit also carried a strong international dimension, as many IUS students from abroad joined their Bosnian colleagues, gaining a deeper understanding of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s growing renewable-energy infrastructure and potential.

Dr. Alagić emphasized that this activity is part of a broader IUS initiative to enhance cooperation with the business sector and connect academic learning with real-world industry experience. Similar field visits are already planned for the upcoming semester.

IUS extends its appreciation to Elektroprivreda BiH for their warm hospitality and to the University management for supporting initiatives that strengthen ties between higher education and industry.
